SPACE GAL II

Just a quick post today. SPIDER-MAN is taking up a lot of my time now….. and as I feared would be the case, I’ve got a lot less time to devote to the blog now. I’m going to try to make a habit of putting up a sketch with some color added over the weekends when I’ve got a bit more breathing room– but I’ll unfortunately possibly be posting a bit less during the week for a while. But here’s another SPACE GAL for you to look at in the meantime– done as a warm up this morning.

OK… that it today.

Just for fun

Actually, every sketch I’ve ever posted here has been for fun, really. I’ll let you in on a little secret: a lot of the every day nature of drawing comics for a living can tend to get tedious at times. (OK… maybe it’s not so much a secret. I’ve cried on your ‘virtual shoulders’ more than once about frustrations with the freelance life….). There might be certain scenes that aren’t very much fun to draw. Perhaps they’re a little mundane. Perhaps they don’t seem to make much sense. Some days I just get tired of drawing other people’s scripts and story ideas. So this sketch blog has been a wonderful release for those frustrations when they build up to the boiling point. At times, it’s been cathartic– like a form of therapy. And today’s offering is something that was exceptionally fun to do. I just sort of turned my brain off and let my hand go. Usually, I try to go into a sketch with at least some vague sense of what I want to put down on the paper. This time, I let my mind wander and just went with whatever strange thought flickered over my brain. And then I had some more fun by laying a few simple colors on the line work. I get a real kick out of the end result.

VULTURE

I’ve been doing a lot of sketches lately of SPIDER-MAN — as well as his secret identity of Peter Parker, Mary Jane, J. Jonah Jameson and the like. Mostly the immediate cast– the protagonists of the SPIDER-MAN universe (although it could be argued that Jameson is more an enemy than a friend of SPIDER-MAN). I thought it would be fun to do some sketches of the wonderfully colorful villains of SPIDER-MAN’s world. SPIDER-MAN has probably the most bizarre and fascinating gallery of bad guys in comics– maybe BATMAN can compete… but he’s a close second, in my humble opinion. In my first introductory phone discussion with FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN writer Peter David, he told me that he was happy to indulge me and write any of SPIDER-MAN’s villains into the comic that I wanted to make it interesting for me. I told him that I was more interested in drawing well constructed, exciting stories with good characterization and dialogue than I was just drawing ‘cool villains’….. and though that’s true, that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy drawing them once in a while. So I thought I’d start with one of my favorite of the Wall Crawler’s bad guys, THE VULTURE. I think drawing old people’s faces is much more interesting than drawing the ‘beautiful young people’ that make up the hero population of comics– and VULTURE has one of the most interesting faces in comics, with his huge nose, small chin and big ears. He’s a great character. So– here’s a quick sketch of the craggy old guy……

Hopefully I’ll be able to post more of SPIDER-MAN’s host of bad guys in the future for you to see.

See you next time……

SPIDER-MAN times 2

Today’s offering is a SPIDER-MAN sketch I did as a warm-up before getting down to work. And since I’m working on a SPIDER-MAN title, and he’s so many folks’ favorite character, who better to warm up with than the web slinger himself, hmmmm? It’s kind of a cop-out to post sketches of characters like SPIDER-MAN….. because I know how much traffic the sketches I did as prep for the series brought it a couple of months back… but I’m feeling in a bit of a pandering mood, so what the heck? So here’s the sketch I did this morning…..

And here’s an image of the big piece that I did for the art auction at HEROES CON last weekend. I nabbed it from Patrick Sun’s web gallery of pictures from HEROES CON. He’s got a ton of really great images from the show and the huge art auction held on Saturday night, so if you weren’t able to make it, check out his pics and live vicariously through Patrick’s digital photo lens…! Hope you don’t mind the little “web theft”, Patrick…..! The FANTASTIC FOUR piece I did last year brought in $900– which was…. well, FANTASTIC– but I was totally stunned at the $1400 price tag this one fetched this year.

OK– that’s it for now. I hope you’re all having (or had, depending on when you read this) a wonderful 4TH OF JULY holiday!
