BECAUSE (a few of) YOU ASKED FOR IT…

potter.jpg

I do occasionally take suggestions for what I’m going to post next here. For the most part, I like to leave it to whatever hits me that particular morning rather than following requests from others. Several folks made mention of HARRY POTTER in the comments section of Friday’s post– and I guess that got my juices flowing. I wouldn’t call myself the biggest HARRY POTTER fan out there– but I do love fantasy and magic as a genre, and so good old Harry appeals to me quite a bit. I’ve read the first book and seen the movies made from the others so far and have really enjoyed them. So for today, I thought I’d do a quick sketch of the kid. It was fun. One day, I’m going to go back and read all the books that I’ve only seen the movies they’ve made of. As fun as it is to see a great book made into a good movie, it’s never as enjoyable as reading the original source material and letting the imagination conjure up images for you.

And imagination’s what it’s supposed to be about, right…?

I THINK I’VE GOT IT…!

So here’s the third version of the sketch for this particular project– and I think I’ve hit on one that I like very much. I took elements of both the previous two attempts and combined them to come up with this take. This one has some of the same depth of the first one, working in elements like the flying ships, mooring towers and even a view of the sea. It also incorporates a bit of the attitude from both the first two– but is more compositionally interesting.

But– to borrow from the end-line of Erik Larsen’s weekly column– that’s one fan’s opinion. I’m willing to concede I could be wrong. Erik’s got a very interesting column this week on lying in the comic book industry. You can find it HERE. See if you can figure out who he’s talking about. I think I have. One’s very obvious– the other will only be clear to those of you who, like me, lurk on WAY too many comic book-related message boards.

OK… that’s it for today– another week down. They seem to fly by faster and faster these days.

Another take

Here’s another version/attempt based on yesterday’s sketch. I like parts of this one more than the first…. like SERRA’S attitude/stance. But I’m not as happy with KOJ in this one. I’m planning on doing ANOTHER version that I’ll hopefully have sketched out in time for the Friday post.

Today is the debut of my buddy Jeff Parker’s AGENTS OF ATLAS comic– drawn by the amazing Leonard Kirk. I think this is gonna be a fantastic comic— the creative team is just killer. I’ll be grabbing a copy for myself this week– I urge you to go out and do the same…!

OK… that’s it for today.
